Registered Dietitian Julia Canavera says, "Your plate is your prescription. We're going to get that nutrient if we're eating the whole food."
Near the top of Canavera's heart healthy food list is salmon. It's high in omega 3 fatty acids, but don't let the word fatty scare you.
Canavera says, "We call them mono or poly unsaturated fatty acid and usually it's omega 3 or omega 6. Those are things that are really going to be good for your heart."
These good fats help protect against heart attacks, increase good cholesterol protect your arteries from plaque and lower blood pressure.
Nuts are another good choice to get that omega 3.
"Whether it be hazelnuts, cashews, brazil those are the foods that will be the most heart healthy for you."
Did you know beans really are good for your heart? In fact they're low in fat and high in fiber, which helps remove bad cholesterol. They also contain B-vitamins which protect against blood clots and hardening of the arteries.
