April 3rd, 1964 Wichita Falls Tornado

It was 48- years ago today that a massive tornado smashed through Wichita Falls.
It's still considered by the National Weather Service to be one of the largest 75- tornadoes of all time.
And, it was also among the first in the nation to be broadcast on live television.
For many who remember Terrible Tuesday,  April 10th, 1979,  that was the tornado of all tornadoes.
Several actually came together to form an F-4 monster, up to a mile- and- a- half- wide, that left some 20,000- homeless.
42- were killed, 17- hundred injured, and it was the most expensive tornado of all- time for years, a cost that would be in the billions today.
But, before that, and just 6- years after a tornado struck in 1958, one hit even more powerful than the monster of '79.
On April 3rd, 1964, the F-5 ripped through City View, and slammed head- on into Sheppard Air Force Base.
7- people were killed, 111- were injured, and Wichita Falls suffered 15- million dollars in damage.
That afternoon, those at KFDX Channel 3- News, pushed a studio camera outside so viewers could get a live shot and learn about damage as the tornado was on the ground.
While not as wide or as deadly as the '79 tornado, 1964's remains the mightiest to ever hit Wichita Falls.
