In 2010, Kammy Hood's young daughter died from a rattlesnake bite.
So, for the second year, her mother is using the tragic loss of her child to get more people to donate blood.
Each unit of donated blood can help save the lives of up to three people.
Unfortunately in august of 2010, that precious gift did not save the life of this precious little one, 23 month old Peyton Hood.
"From the time she was bit to the time she died, it was five hours. In that five hours, she was at the hospital and she received blood. My husband was about three and a half... four hours away. So, while the blood didn't save her life, it prolonged it to where her dad could get there and say goodbye to her and all her family could get there," says Kammy Hood, Peyton's mother.
Hood's family opened Peyton's Place at River Bend Nature Center in memory of the toddler and her love of butterflies.
Now, the family is teaming with Texas Blood Institute to host the second annual celebration blood drive in Peyton's honor.
"This just helps to raise awareness, you know what they're doing, it tells people that hey, go ahead and donate blood so that the blood will be on the shelves whenever the need strikes," explains Jennifer Risinger, with Texas Blood Institute.
And Hood is urging you to donate now instead of later.
"Everybody has the possibility of needing blood. If it's not you, it could be a family member, a loved one, a friend. So if we don't all give blood there's not gonna be enough and there's not substitute. There is no substitute for human blood," says Hood.
The blood drive in memory of Peyton Hood is Saturday, July 28th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at River Bend Nature Center.
Late year's drive generated 40 units of blood so this year, coordinators obviously want even more.
And in case you're wondering, all blood from that drive will remain right here in the Wichita Falls area.
