Man sentenced to prison for murder, attempted murder sentenced again

VERNON - A man who spent time in prison for murder and attempted murder has now been sentenced to another prison term by a judge in Wilbarger County.

46th District Attorney Staley Heatly said Edwin Louis Akes, 52, was sentenced by District Judge Dan Mike Bird to 75 years for aggravated robbery.

A jury earlier found Akes guilty of the March robbery near downtown Vernon.

Police said Akes flagged down the victim's car on March 4 and asked him for a ride.
When the 73-year-old man declined, Akes pulled a pistol from his pocket and demanded his wallet.

The man refused to give it to Akes, and then Akes began beating the man on the head with the butt of the pistol.

Police said several bystanders tried to help but Akes pointed the gun at them. Akes then pulled the wallet from the man's pocket and ran.

Police later found the gun which turned out to be a BB gun. They found Akes in a nearby apartment, and Akes told them he didn't know anything about a robbery, but witnesses identified him and police also found a shirt in the apartment with blood on it which later proved to be from the victim.

Heatly introduced 12 prior convictions, of Akes, including murder, attempted murder and injury of a child in Tarrant county.
