IT WON'T BE LONG BEFORE KIDS ARE HEADED BACK TO SCHOOL AND MANY OF THEM WILL HAVE THE SUPPLIES THEY NEED THANKS TO A SPECIAL PROGRAM CALLED PROJECT BACK TO SCHOOL.
FOR HER EFFORTS IN MAKING THE PROGRAM A SUCCESS YEAR AFTER YEAR WE HONOR CHERYL RITHCIE WITH THIS MONTH'S SPIRIT OF TEXOMA AWARD.
WHILE VOLUNTEERING AT SCOTLAND PARK ELEMENTARY CHERYL RITCHIE GOT A PRACTICAL LESSON--THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A FREE EDUCATION....
Cheryl Ritchie says, I think alot of times we are pretty far removed and we don't see the need in WF when by volunteering at the school I was able to see the children and recognize the need and I thought well let's try to do something about it."
SO CHERYL DID...THREE YEARS AGO SHE STARTED PROJECT BACK TO SCHOOL...AND SHE QUICKLY FOUND OUT IT'S EXPENSIVE PROVIDING KIDS THE BASIC TOOLS THEY NEED IN SCHOOL.
EACH BACKPACK WITH A KIT OF SUPPLIES RUNS EIGHTEEN DOLLARS...AND SINCE THE PROGRAM BUYS ONE FOR EVERY CHILD IN SIX SCHOOLS IN THE WICHITA FALLS I-S-D THE PRICE TAG ADDS UP.
"It has been the support of WF that has made Project Back to School a success, whether it be volunteers or financial support they have been the ones that has really stepped up."
TEACHERS WAIT TABLES TO EARN TIPS, FOLKS DROP CASH IN DONATION BUCKETS AND PARENTS PICK UP EXTRA SUPPLIES FOR OTHER STUDENTS WHILE BUYING SUPPLIES FOR THEIR OWN KIDS.
IN THE END FIVE THOUSAND BACKPACKS ARE PACKED TO THE TUNE OF 90-THOUSAND DOLLARS.
THOSE WHO SUPPORT THE PROGRAM ARE MAKING AN INVESTMENT IN OUR CHILDREN, OUR COMMUNITY...OUR FUTURE.
"They have the tools they need so they can start school with a better self-esteem they are excited about school and they have what they need to start school."
AND FOR MEETING THAT NEED CHERYL RITCHIE TRULY HAS THE SPIRIT OF TEXOMA...AND MANY HAVE LEARNED THAT FIRST HAND FROM HER...FOR THE SECOND YEAR A TEAM OF 200 VOLUNTEERS WILL SOON OFFER MORE THAN JUST SUPPLIES AT THE PROJECT BACK TO SCHOOL ROUNDUP WHERE HUNDREDS WILL LINE UP FOR ASSISTANCE.
We are doing free immunizations, sports physicals, we are doing vision and health screenings. We have information booths with school and community services."
THE ROUND UP IS AT MCNEIL JUNIOR HIGH ON AUGUST 13--TH FROM 9am to 1pm.
