City staffers say the whole Lawrence Road area has developed to include restaurants and retail outlets ... so they said "general commercial" was a more appropriate zoning than the former zoning from 1985.
But when the city sent out notification letters to folks within 200 feet of the proposed zoning ... Wichita Engineering objected.
Their land would have been grandfathered in for light industrial use ... but if they wanted to expand in the future, they would have had to get a conditional use permit.
Councilors voted to exclude Wichita Engineering's land from the rezoning -- and keep that area as light industrial.

"As light industrial, you certainly have the potential for more intense uses & greater probability of a negative impact on the surrounding neighborhood -- & in this case, there are residences within that neighborhood."
Marty Odum said city staffers had recommended rezoning the entire area because they were looking long- term.
