Cracking Down on Drivers Passing Stopped School Buses

Texas state law requires drivers to stop while school buses are loading and unloading children. But, Wichita County Sheriff's officials say they've received numerous complaints from concerned parents about motorists not stopping .To try and crack down on violators they've set up ride alongs over the past few days.
So far they have given out 8 tickets have they given since the rides started. Sheriff David Duke says the number may seem low but the safety of children is at stake. Over the past few weeks school bus safety has been a growing concern for parents in Wichita County.
"They were complaining about the people passing the school buses when the buses have the stop signs out and the emergency flashers flashing on US 82 which is Seymour Highway," said Sheriff Duke.
The sheriff says that lately drivers have been passing school buses while their stop signs are out and flashing.
"We want you to know if the lights are on or the stop sign is out please stop that means children are loading and unloading the bus. They see passenger cars pass the buses all the time when the lights are flashing," said Tammy Slimp, Durham School Services.
Because of this deputies with the Wichita County Sheriff's office have been riding school buses to crack down on violators. So far Electra, Iowa Park, and Holiday school districts have allowed deputies to ride along.
"We just want to make an awareness of it, we will be out there and we will do that and I think we've made a good presence already and we'll continue to do it," said Sheriff Duke.
You might want to think twice before ignoring those flashing red lights, sheriff duke say it could cost up to a $300 for going around a stopped bus.
Sheriff Duke says they will keep riding on the buses for as long as the school districts will allow them to continue. He hopes it will provide a warning to drivers out there to pay attention and obey traffic laws.
