Former Wichita Falls mayor and architect, Charles Harper, was appointed by the city to help rebuild Wichita Falls after the tornado. Harper used the lessons learned from Terrible Tuesday to help put together a plan of action when disaster strikes. Part of his plan included debunking the myth of leaving a window open in your house, to lessen the destruction to your home during a tornado.
"We did a lot of research and we figured out what would really would happen, the thing that really happened is that the windows break or if you leave them open the wind blows through it and actually the wind gets in the house and blows the house up," said Harper
In addition to putting together a his tornado disaster plan, Harper also collaborated with the 2009 Wichita Falls Leadership Class on their book "47 Miles" , which tells the story of the '79 tornado through survivor accounts.
