Helping to Hire Our Heroes

They've risked so much and put themselves in harm's way to defend our country. And war heroes continue to come home to begin the next chapter of their lives. A Wichita Falls agency is helping veterans find jobs. According to that commission, Texas leads the nation in unemployed vets. In 2009, the commission helped more than 47,000 veterans find employment. And each day the goal is to try to lower those unemployment numbers.
Over the last three to four months, officials with the Texas Veterans Commission in Wichita Falls has seen a steady increase of veterans looking for help finding jobs.
"We've normally see anywhere from about 150-200 vets or more each month, working with them on their job search and assistance there," said Tim Shatto
a Veterans Employment Representative
Shatto connects employers seeking to fill vacancies with these men and women. He says their military background often makes them an ideal candidate.
"When I talk to employers about recently separated veterans and utilizing their transferable skills, they've got a high learning curve, they've got a great work ethic, and that's normally that we try to sell them on," said Shatto.
And it's employers like AAA Guardian Foundation who know first hand the skills these heroes bring into the workplace. In fact, the company recently hired a veteran.
"Already he's the best one normally when you hire someone they don't know what to do, and he's been willing to step up and dig through old files and see what is going on and figure out what we are doing," said Jared Golden, owner of AAA Guardian Foundation.
"We've got several employers that will call me individually and 'Hey I want to hire a vet', and you know I love getting those phone calls," said Shatto.
Shatto says many of the veterans who come into his office, only have a high school education. So he helps to shape their resume to emphasize their military skills. To get in touch with the local Texas Veterans Commission just call 322-1801, extension 127.
