Instead of cutting down a Christmas tree this year, students at Lamar Elementary decided to build one.

It's part of an exercise geared towards teaching pattern recognition.

The pre-k class at Lamar Elementary is off the chain.

They are using a hands on approach to learn the importance of pattern recognition.

It involves making paper chains from construction paper.

Students are given three colors, red, white, and green and each color is assigned a letter.

It's up to the students to build the paper chain in alphabetical order. It's called the "abc pattern" and these guys get it.

One by one, piece by piece, the students use their "abc pattern" technique to join each paper link to one another.

Once each student finishes their paper chain, they all join together to create a symbol of the season-a Christmas tree.
