Electra could have a new police chief by the end of July.

Earlier this month, the city started advertising for the position, which was vacated six months ago after city commissioner fired long time police chief Johnny Morris.

Officials say they wanted to get the police department back up to full staff before focusing on hiring a chief. Officials say they're still searching for a full-time police officer opening.

As for the chief position, city manager, Larry Panell, says seven applications have come in and are being reviewed.

Six of them are from Texas, including an application from Deputy Chief Michael Hopkins, and one is from out of state.

Pannell says the job will close on Monday and he hopes to have a police chief hired by the end of next month.
