Wednesday is Purple Heart Day across the country and in Archer City, a three time recipient of that award received a special celebration to honor his service as well as a send off and an early birthday celebration.

Robert Willingham, a World War II and Korean War veteran, will turn 87 on Aug. 15 and will be moving to a VA home in Clinton, OK on Thursday.

His fellow veterans and friends like Burk Morris, with the American Legion in Archer City, decided to throw him a farewell party.

"Well I think it's really special," Morris says. "It means a lot to me just because I know it means a lot to Bert. I want him to know how much we appreciate him."

Willingham joined the military toward the end of WWII and flew 10 missions in a B-24 bomber.

Also, he fought in the Korean War where he was injured in battle.

Friends say it is important for them to honor the man who served his country for 27 years.
