A Wichita County father has spent the past 650 days in jail and this afternoon, a Wichita County jury decided he will remain behind bars for many more years.
On Friday Brent Benefield was found guilty of causing injuries to his infant son, Lucas, that led to his death in February 2012 as well as abusing the child's mother while she was pregnant.
And as Mechell Dixon reports that jury recommended Benefield be sent to prison.

"I ask that you consider the minimum in this case and recommend it be probation."

That's the sentence the defense asked the jury to return for Brent Benefield during the punishment phase of his trial.
However, after nearly three hours of deliberating, jurors recommended Benefield be sentenced to five years in prison for continuous abuse to the mother of four month old Lucas and 10 years for causing injury to the child.

"His life ended with violence at the hands of his father and there really was no doubt when you heard all of the extensive medical evidence.. this defendant was the only person who could have done that," says John Gillespie, lead prosecutor.

But the defense disagrees.

We felt Brent was innocent from the beginning. So, we're going to be looking forward to an appeal.  We feel he is innocent but we respect the jury's time and attention they gave in this case," says Brennon Brady, lead defense attorney.

A case the prosecution says sends this message.

"We're not going to ignore child abuse.  We're not going to look the other way.  We're going to hold people accountable who damage the most vulnerable among us," Gillespie adds.
