"I wanted our 6th graders to get the chance to do something that they normally wouldn't be able to do not just a little program but a big full time thing with fancy songs and nice sets that they get to paint with fun costumes", said K-6th grade music teacher Abi Parker.
6th graders at Ben Franklin are getting ready for a musical with a big name.
You've heard....Famous for his books and rhyming words, Dr. Seuss.
These kids are taking his rhymes and putting them to music, with the Seussical Musical.
"We decided to do it with our 6th graders as a full blown on program where their helping with sets and on the stage and curtains", said Parker.
Once she wrote a grant to the Music Theater International in association with NBC's show Smash.
Music teacher Abi Parker obtained the rights to the music.
"We were selected as a finalist out of the whole country it was like a thousand entries. We weren't one of the top but since we were runners up we were given the chance to produce or own musical," said Parker.
Parker and her students received $500 to put on the musical.
The students say its all coming together.
"We're all doing a bunch of stuff and everybody get a part", said 6th grader Chris Norman.
"I love to share Broadway with the kids because I love it so much but its such a great environment for them to get to be in a musical because they learn team work and confidence self importance . Kids that normally have been pretty shy just blossom, said Parker".
"I love to act and sing and I just wanted to do this and I'm very excited about it", said 6th grader Angela Ramirez.
The students will perform a show for the school on may 29th and evening show for parents and the public on may 30th.
