Chief Joe Burton fights crime each day at the Archer City Police Department.
Now, he is engaged in another fight.
And as Mechell Dixon shows us, it is a fight for his life.
For the past three months, Archer City Police Chief Joe Burton has worked fighting crime.
But he is also fighting something else-- cancer.
And he is keeping up his duties as chief and undergoing chemotherapy.
"It drains you. It makes you sick all the time. It's like having the flu. Body aches. You get neuropathy. It's not very pleasant," Chief Burton says.
But he pushes through the pain-- something his daughter says is not surprising.
"My dad's always been a little hard headed and stubborn and nothing's ever going to get him down," says Brynn Burton.
Not even his battle with stage 4 colon cancer in August 2012 and then again this past March, which he says has spread to his lungs and liver.
"Ninety percent of dealing with this isn't the medicine. It's upstairs. If you let it get you down, it gets you down," Chief Burton explains.
Burton's family and his faith are getting him through this difficult time but instead of fighting his second cancer battle locally, he has decided head to Houston for treatment.
"We've heard some very good stories that people have shared with us and lot of research at MD Anderson is what we agreed would be our best bet," adds Misti Burton, his wife.
So, to help fund the trip, a benefit is being planned for Chief Burton with these items and many more donations from area businesses.
It's an outpouring of community support to help a man who is fighting for his life while protecting the community.
Mechell Dixon, KFDX 3 News.
A benefit catfish and chicken dinner for Chief Burton is Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Archer City High School cafeteria.
The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for kids under age 12.
And Chief Burton and his family will be there Sunday to thank the community for all of support.
