They're creating another shopping center for folks in Texoma to use off Lawrence and Call Field.
“This is the grocery store, this is the US Cellular building, and this is Braums.”
Bobby Schaff, the co-owner of Schaff & Clark says those stores are only phase one of this massive complex. But with stores still sitting empty nearby, you wonder if this building boom will ever bust?
“Are we overbuilding? We don't think so. Everything right now we have somebody to go in it,” he said.
In 2005 construction began for this shopping center, and it wasn't until just six months ago, Andy Lee, the leasing agent for Quail Creek Crossing says they filled the last empty store.
“Adding all of these retailers, everybody shops at these stores outside of this market so we lose our retail dollar sales tax revenue. By bringing in these collective stores to the marketplace we capture our sales tax dollars for our local economy,” said Lee.
“Retail wise the economy right now in Wichita Falls is booming. People say there are a lot of names that are not here, and people want those names,” said Schaaf.
He says the key is being selective and targeting big box stores to fill the facilities. And though there may be some stores empty for a while, both Schaaf and Lee say sales tax dollars is a way to measure their success.
Lee says last month dollars spent by shoppers rose from the month before by 1.4%.
Schaaf said the first store ready for business in the new center will be Natural Grocers. That's set to open on December 1st.
