Bowie Residents Take Stand over Water Rates

- Some Bowie residents are taking a stand against higher water rates, drought or no drought.

Bowie City Secretary Mitzi Wallace says a petition is being circulated around town to rescind the water and sewer rate hikes that are supposed to go into effect on October 1st.

Wallace says in order for the petition to get action from the Bowie City Council, it must have signatures of 20-percent of the number of voters who voted in the last city election. Wallace says that is about 206 signatures. If enough signatures are collected and verified, Wallace says the issue will go before the council where they will either rescind the ordinance or call a special election. In May, Councilors voted unanimously to raise water rates by two-point-five percent each year over the next three years as well as a one-point-five percent increase on the sewage rate.
