But some local cancer survivors say there still isn't as much help for people fighting the disease as they would like to see.
Terri Lumely and Pat Braggs have two unique diagnoses stories, both of them pushed for extra testing, even after being told not to worry. It's a request they say may have saved their lives.
"I talked to a surgeon and they said, they did a sonogram and they thought everything was fine, but there might be something there, I wasn't happy with that, might be something there,” says 5 year cancer survivor Lumely.
Lumely pushed her doctor to do more testing and following her instincts paid off. She did have cancer and went through months of chemotherapy and radiation before having to have her breasts removed.
Her friend and co-worker Pat Braggs has a similar story.
In August of 2002 she had a mammogram that came back normal. But a few months later, “I was taking a shower and I felt a lump and had gone to a doctor and it had already grown to like a three centimeter size in just three months,” says Braggs.
Both women now share their message, hoping other women can learn from what they went through that no one knows your body like you do. And if you are unsure, get a second opinion.
“Don't just think that one persons gonna tell you yes and another persons gonna tell you no. If you ever hear that maybe or yes there might be, go for it, go look and find out,” says Lumely.
Both women would like to start a support group because they say no one can help someone battling cancer better than someone who has been through it. They hope to be able to start something in the near future.
In the meantime, we were able to find a few breast cancer support groups locally.
