Burkburnett Tornado First in Wichita County in Over 6 Years

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Norman, Oklahoma confirmed two tornadoes
touched down in Texoma Wednesday, May 7, 2014.

The first tornado touched down near Burkburnett at 7:03 pm.

Only minor damage was reported, mostly to trees and power lines.

A second tornado touched down in Comanche County near the Wichita Mountains
Wildlife Refuge at 7:15 pm.

No damage was reported.

According to tornado records by the Storm Prediction Center (SPC),
the tornado that touched down in Burkburnett is the first tornado in Wichita County
in just over 6 years.

On April 7, 2008, an EF-0 tornado passed two miles northwest of Electra.

An EF-1 tornado passed 4 miles east of Harrold on the same day.

SPC records show that since the 1950s, the longest stretch for Wichita County to
go without seeing a tornado was nearly 7 years.
