Burnt nursing home location may soon be home to apartments

BOWIE - One year after a massive fire at an abandoned nursing home in Bowie, there are plans underway to turn the burnt building into apartments.

On New Year's Eve 2016, a fire broke out at the former Bellmire Healthcare Facilities.

The 30,000 square-foot facility has been sitting empty since 2012.

At the time of the fire, Bowie fire officials ruled the cause of the fire as suspicious.

The property was given back to the city for back taxes and the City Code Officer David Rainey says the City of Bowie had budgeted money to remove the burnt building, but before the process could begin Rainey says the owner paid all the back taxes and sold the building.

The new developer out of the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex told Rainey he would like to build some apartments on the site.

Rainey says the developer is currently in the design phase of the project.
