The four-county area CASA of Red River serves, including Archer, Clay, Montague, and Wichita Counties, is number one in the state in the number of cases per capita involving abused or neglected children.

Today, CASA supporters attended the Light of Hope Luncheon, celebrating the children who went through the program last year, most of which were then placed in safe, permanent homes.

The luncheon is also about awareness, making sure community members know that the number of child abuse cases each year isn't going down by symbolically lighting a candle for each victim served.

Ron Bryant, CASA executive director, says, "We lit 312 last year.  The year before that, 295.  This year, it's 324, so it's obvious the problem is not going away.  The number continues to grow, unfortunately."

Because the number of child victims continues to increase, CASA needs more volunteers.

If you'd like to be a Court Appointed Special Advocate for a child in need, call the organization at 766-0552 or stop by their office in the 800 block of Austin.
