Residents in Cashion, the small community north of Sheppard Air Force Base, are being encouraged to do their part in an effort to make their neighborhoods safer.
On Monday evening, the Wichita County Sheriff's Office held a meeting at the Friberg-Cooper Volunteer Fire Department to tell folks how they can get involved in their neighborhood watch program.
Sheriff's Deputy Melvin Joyner says deputies can't patrol rural areas as much as they'd like, and it's up to residents in those areas to keep a watchful eye for anything out of the ordinary.
"No one knows their neighborhoods better than the people that live there," Joyner says. "They know who is coming, who is going. What vehicles that their neighbors drive. What hours their neighbors work so our goal is to increase that awareness and get the entire neighborhoods together."
