A significant drop in well levels has the City of Vernon elevating to Stage 3 mandatory water restrictions.

Despite the city having several water well fields and numerous water tanks around town, Mayor Jeff Bearden says water levels were quickly dropping.

So to conserve water, the city moved to Stage 3 mandatory water restrictions earlier this week. This means outside watering is only allowed between 6 p.m. and 10 a.m.

However, the city is asking residents and businesses to further conserve by voluntarily alternating their watering days.

The mayor says anyone caught watering outside the designated hours faces a fine of up to $500.
