Commissioners Working on County Overtime Policy

Wichita County commissioners continue to try to tackle the issue of overtime for county employees, which isn't accounted for in county budgets.
That's a topic they revisited today at their weekly meeting.
The county changed the policy about a year ago and commissioners decided to pay off overtime expenses each pay period, or every two weeks.
Commissioners are now looking to amend that policy.
Barry Mahler, commissioner for precinct three, says, "The sheriff's department as pointed out that it would be better for them if they had a little bit more flexibility because of the fact that they get into an overtime situation, and rather than have that paid out, a lot of those deputies would maybe rather take a long weekend."
Mahler says when a county employee, such as a jailer, takes a day off work, the county often has to call in another worker to take over the original workers' tasks.
He says commissioners are taking this into consideration into managing overtime expense.
