A former building manager for a local condominium is sentenced for embezzling tens of thousands of dollars of homeowner association funds.
Benny Hopkins was found guilty of theft of property over 20- thousand- dollars. He's sentenced to 10 years deferred adjudication and will also have to pay more than 63- thousand- dollars in restitution.
Police were called by an officer of the association about missing funds from the "vantage point homeowner association" at 21- hundred Santa Fe. That officer told police Hopkins had been writing checks from the association to himself and cashing them. Police also said credit card statements from the association's Sam's club account showed Hopkins bought items for himself.
They say they also looked at invoices submitted by Hopkins that showed purchases, but the money actually went to pay off Hopkins' credit card bills. Police say bank records showed Hopkins had been stealing from the association since 2007.
