The Red River land dispute will be front-and-center during a Congressional hearing next week.

Thirteenth District Congressman Mac Thornberry authored the Red River Private Property Protection Act.

The bill aims to safeguard Texoma landowners against a potential federal land grab by protecting private land owners and settling all federal ownership claims.

Thornberry says the hearing, which is Tuesday morning, is an important step in making sure private property is protected.

"This is our opportunity to make our case to the committee about why we need to do this, but it's also an opportunity for the Bureau of Land Management to tell us in public what they think about it," Thornberry says. "Hopefully that will help narrow the issues and we can move this process forward."

Congressman Thornberry and a BLM representative will testify at the hearing as will a Texoma landowner whose property along the red river has been called into question.

Thornberry says if all goes well, Congress could vote on the legislation as early as September.
