Correctional officers needed at Texas prisons

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice is doubling recruiting efforts for correctional officers at prisons across the state.

Currently, The James V. Allred unit in Wichita County has 75 vacant positions.

At the moment, there are 669 full time correctional officer positions at Allred for more than 3,700 inmates.

Jason Clark, a public information officer for TDCJ, says even though some facilities like Allred are not fully staffed, the community and officers are safe.

"There is no risk of public safety. That unit is well staffed at 90% but again we are continuously recruiting staff to keep make sure we keep those numbers up and it's a top priority for the agency," Clark says.

TDCJ is offering a $3,000 bonus for any new correctional officers who commit to work at one of seven short-staffed prison facilities.

Bonus Eligible Units:

  • Connally
  • Dalhart
  • Ft. Stockton
  • Lynaugh
  • McConnell
  • Smith
  • Stiles

The next academy to become a correctional officer will start on July 26 in Plainview, Texas.
