A man wanted for shooting and killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend Monday morning, shot a police officer during a chase Monday afternoon, police said.
The injured Dallas police officer has been transported to Medical City Hospital in Dallas and is expected to be OK. A medical source told NBC 5 the officer was shot in the stomach and was wearing a vest.
The man was wanted in connection with a fatal shooting of a pregnant woman, believed to be the man's ex-girlfriend, that took place Monday morning on the 12300 block of Hoblitzelle.
After the shooting, nearby Hamilton Park Pacesetter Magnet Elementary School was locked down as a precaution.
After leading police on a chase up and down Central Expressway, the driver then pulled into the same Hamilton Park neighborhood where the woman was shot earlier in the morning. As the driver sped through the neighborhood trying to elude police, he apparently began taking shots at police and is believed to have struck at least one officer.
Chopper 5 captured video of the driver stopping at one home and then people outside the running for cover as if they were being fired upon. The driver then again sped off down the road.
With his getaway car showing signs of damage, the driver then crashed, got out of the car and took off on foot.
The man is believed to have entered a house on Schroeder Road, and a standoff is underway. Nearby homes have been evacuated as a precaution.
The standoff is located about a block from the elementary school. School officials said all students and staff members are safe and accounted for and that students are being kept away from windows. The district is working with Dallas police to determine if the normal 3:30 p.m. dismissal time will be affected.
Dallas SWAT has arrived on the scene and Chopper 5 has pulled back as to not divulge any ground activity by police officers.
