Defense testimony is underway in the trial of a woman charged with intoxication manslaughter in a 2010 wreck in which her brother was killed.
This morning Duerson's attorney, Dean Sanders, called several character witnesses to the stand. The victim's wife testified she was very angry when she first found out her husband died in a wreck in which Duerson was driving the vehicle.
She says those feelings of animosity quickly went away because she views Duerson as a sister. She also said she knows that though Duerson is at fault, her late husband is too because he chose to get in a vehicle with someone who was driving while intoxicated.
Numerous other family members testified that Duerson is the glue that holds their family together and that she's a wonderful aunt to her nieces and nephews. One of Duerson's friends testified that as Billy's birthday approached, she let Duerson stay in her apartment with her because Duerson was having terrible nightmares.
Duerson was driving a car northbound on Kemp in the early morning hours of January 21st, 2010. She hit two trees and a light pole, causing the car to split in half, and ultimately causing the death of her brother, Billy Crow.
Tests performed after the accident show Duerson's blood alcohol content to have been more than twice the legal limit.
