Diabesity Walk Helps People Pledge to Make a Change

- Every step makes a difference.

That was the message at the first Diabesity Walk-a-Thon.

Dozens of people walked in Williams Park Saturday to raise awareness of Diabesity, a new term to describe the current epidemic of obesity and diabetes.

Organizers measured participants' height, weight and body mass index, then gave a plan to help them fit into a healthy BMI range.

Attendees signed pledges promising to exercise thirty minutes a day for three days a week for the next three months.

Organizers plan to call and check up on everyone who made a pledge.

Walkers say getting healthy is important for everyone but they really want to focus on the younger generation.

“We have so many young people that are overweight and don't get enough exercise so we just wanted to bring them out today and just encourage them to walk because every step makes a difference,” says Diabesity walker Robin Hart.

Organizers plan to make the diabesity walk an annual event.
