Dozens Make a Splash During Special Olympics Swim Meet

- Dozens of athletes from across North Texas put their freestyle, butterfly, and backstrokes to the test today during the annual Special Olympics Aquatics Competition.

Special Olympians took to the Vernon College Aquatics Center pool to show off their best Michael Phelps skills.

They competed in races like the backstroke, team relay, and 25, 50, and 100 meter freestyle.

We spoke with one athlete who says this is his fourth year to take part in the event and he told us why he enjoys it so much.

Wes Darnell, one of the competitors, says, "It's fun and exercise. There are a lot of fans out there."

About three dozen Olympians competed in the events.

Those athletes represented four teams: the Vernon Lions, the Tarrant County Texans, the WFISD Firecrackers, and the High Plains Heat.
