DPS troopers say during the Labor Day enforcement effort last year, they made more than 1600 DWI arrests, and about 218 of those were the direct result of the increased patrols.
During the same time period last year DPS enforcement also resulted in over 24,000 speeding citations and over 3,000 seat belt and child safety seat citations.
Local troopers say they are encouraging everyone to remember to buckle up this weekend and make plans to arrange a designated driver if you are drinking.
"There's gonna be a lot of patrol going on, and they will be looking for those hazardous things that you look for on these holidays. You know the drinking and driving, speeding aggressive driving, not wearing seat belts. We want everyone to enjoy this weekend, but enjoy it safely. We want them to get home safely," DPS trooper Tony Fulton says.
DPS is also encouraging everyone to eliminate distractions, such usage of mobile devices, and reminding everyone to drive with caution.
