Drought: 2014 Rainfall Nearly as Low as 2011

It seems shocking but the rainfall during the first five months of the year has been just slightly higher than 2011.

In 2011, near the beginning of the "Great Drought of 2010s", the amount of rain that fell was 3.34" between January 1 and May 31, 2011.

The drought itself has an unofficial beginning according to National Weather Service data of October 2010.  That means we are in the fifth year of the drought.

And the beginning of this year is not helping us much as far as the lakes and water shed.  So far since January 1, 2014 the official recording station has receive only 4.73" of rain and snow.  This is over an inch more than year 2011.  But perspective is everything; let's look at 2012 and 2013.

In 2012 the total amount of rain was 9.78", nearly 10 inches.  And in year 2013 the total was 7.27".  To further add insult to injury even receiving these good amounts of rainfall didn't stop the lakes from dropping and the water from vanishing away.

Of course it is VERY important to remember that these reading are recorded at the "official" location on Shepard Air Force Base and Wichita Falls Regional Airport.

Recently we have received a good amount of rain over the water shed and of course the National Weather Service does not have a public recording station in the water shed.

But in Seymour the amount of water per cubic feet that was passing through on the Wichita River was nearly one cubic foot.  After the good rain the amount of water passing by raised to nearly 70 cubic feet per minute.  This is a good sign that the water is running off and in some locations the ground is saturated.

But only time will tell if the rain has helped or if we will get more rain in our future.  If you check the current forecast it calls for a few very light showers today (5/13/14) but dry conditions are forecast for the next seven days.
