Drug Abuse State Rankings

Prescription drug abuse is a serious problem in the US, but more than half of states aren't doing enough to stop this dangerous epidemic.

That's according to a report from the Trust for America's Health which rated each state on its compliance with ten strategies that can help curb prescription drug abuse.

28 states and Washington D.C. were employing fewer than six of the ten strategies, and only two states, New Mexico and Vermont, were using all ten.

The strategies included laws requiring that patients show an ID before they can receive a controlled substance, prescription drug monitoring programs, support for substance abuse treatment and mandatory education for doctors who prescribe pain medications.

The report also found drug overdose deaths doubled in 29 states over the past decade.
