Duncan Students Compete in GMA Video Challenge

It was an unthinkable tragedy that had eyes all over the world looking to Duncan, Oklahoma.

“In a small town of 22,000 people you never think when you turn on Fox News or CNN and see your home town right there,” said Patrick Sullivan, a student at Duncan High School.

“I was a little bit scared and just because the second day of school we did not attend, or most of us did not, because there were threats to the school,” said another student Madeleine McElroy.

But these students wouldn't let the drive by shooting death of Australian baseball player Chris Lane define their town.

And through a Good Morning America competition they planned to change the minds of many.

High schools across the nation were asked to make a video to Katy Perry's song “Roar.”

“The 'Roar' song itself is really about overcoming something and finding your place in society and your voice. I think our high school has found our voice in our community and we want everyone to hear our roar," said Sullivan.

Online the video has more than 14 hundred views and the Twitter #HeaDuncanRoar was trending in the state of Oklahoma.

A win they didn't think they'd score when signing up for the competition.

“Win or lose this has created so much positive impact on us and our school and community, honestly we could care less if we win,” said McElroy.

“It is everything I hoped the video would be, it is showcasing all of the students in a positive light, it's showing us all coming together in a sea of green in this very gym,” said Sullivan.

Coming together after such a senseless, tragic event, to show the world why they roar.

The winner of the competition will be determined on October18th.

If Duncan High School wins, Katy Perry will come to their school on her birthday, October 25th, for a private concert.
