Early Voting Plays Bigger Role in Election for Candidates

Voters will head to the polls on Tuesday to let their voices be heard in the Texas Primary.

Folks at the Wichita County Clerk's office were very busy on Monday getting everything ready for Election Day.

Crews took the voting machines out of storage and got them set up at polling places all across the area.

Early voting numbers released by the clerk's office show quite a few registered voters took advantage of early voting.

Out of the 70,000 registered voters in Wichita County, nearly 5,000 Republicans and about 850 Democrats voted early in this election.

But, how important is early voting  for the candidates?

Candidates and their camps say there are many factors that can keep voters away from the polls on Election Day like the weather so that is why they start campaigning early, trying to capture those votes early.

Melvin Joyner, Campaign Manager for Incumbent Mike Little in the Justice of Peace Precinct 1 Place 2 race, says voters are taking advantage of early voting more and more every election.

"Any candidate that's going to run for office, you want to get your name recognition out there as soon as possible," Joyner says. "When an election starts, they start seeing the candidates out, hearing the candidate forums. They are going to have that decision made so they're ready to go ahead get the voting down."

Also, the team running the campaign for Little's challenger, Robert Woodruff, had a similar game plan.

"It gives the voters a chance to know who he is," Woodruff's Campaign Manager Lisa Woodruff says. "I did not want to wait until the last minute to get his name out there so that's why I started so early because I wanted them to know who he is, and see his face and why he is running and that he wants it."

Woodruff says early voting gives voters more flexibility.

"It's very important because like me, we're busy with work, with families so it gives people more time to go out and vote when their busy with their schedules," Woodruff says.
