Electra City Leaders Accept Petition to Amend the City Charter

- Electra city leaders accepted the petition to amend the town's city charter during last night's commission meeting. And, that means the issue should soon be decided by voters.

Resident Sue Howell started collecting signatures last August. She says the push by city leaders to remove Johnny Morris as police chief prompted her to gather support to amend the city's charter to include initiative, referendum and recall powers.

Those are options Howell says voters need when they want to make changes, remove elected officials or call elections in unusual situations. Howell says she's thrilled her hard work has paid off.

"The petition that was passed that was presented last night was one of the first things to get us our rights of initiative, referendum and recall in our charter that we were suppose to have to begin with," says Howell.

Howell says the matter is expected to be on the city election ballot in May.
