Family and Prosecutors react to Verdict of EC Blair Trial

Billy Martin says they didn't really know how the trial would go, so he and the family just tried to prepare themselves for either outcome. Ten out of 12 jurors were in favor of a not guilty verdict Thursday night, before all finally agreed E.C Blair was not responsible for Leah Martin's murder.

“I had already prepared myself for it to go either way,” Martin said. “With it being 10-2 that's an indicator of which way the jury was going to go. There were mixed emotions. A lot of us had prepared ourselves. We didn't really want a guilty verdict but if someone is guilty of something then they have their chance to prove it in a court of law.”

The trial was based mostly on circumstantial evidence, which Young County District Attorney Dee Peavy knows very well can be hard to prove.

When you have a circumstantial evidence case you have to take all the evidence together,” Peavy said. “I don't think there was any particular piece of evidence that turned this case one way or the other.”

Even though the jury ruled overwhelmingly not guilty, martin does not put any of the blame on prosecutors. He says in his opinion they did a good job.

“There were a lot of stories that changed from then till now. That's kind of hard. For it being 2 years ago, that's kind of hard to follow,” Martin said

Peavy says she simply hoped for a different outcome.

“I was so impressed by the strength and resilience of the Martin family. My heart goes out to them. This has been very difficult for them,” Peavy said.

Peavy refused to comment on whether Blair could face any further charges. And, Martin says as of now there are no plans to file a civil suit against Blair.
