Farm Bill Basics Meeting Set in Wichita Falls

- As the USDA moves forward on its implementation of the 2014 Farm Bill, many farmers are still in the dark on its components.

The 2014 Farm Bill passed two months ago but many farmers are still confused on the basics of the bill, which is what farming experts hope to address next week during a Farm Bill Basics Meeting.

Kenneth McAlister says the drought has made growing wheat difficult to say the least over the past few years. Now, he has an added concern-- understanding details in the 2014 Farm Bill.

"It's really out in the open.  Nobody knows a whole lot," says McAlister, a wheat farmer in Wichita County.

But an upcoming meeting in Wichita Falls may answer some of his and other farmer's questions. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service is teaming with Region 9 Education Center to host a meeting to simplify the components of the farm bill for area farmers. While attending in person is preferred, coordinators say farmers can also attend via webinar.

"So, it will be two way interactive video they can watch and listen and ask questions, as well.  Also, it will be recorded for those who want to watch it later," says Mike Campbell, education specialist for Region 9.

"it's kinda gonna be nice to find some information out and go ahead and start some plannings.  Don't know that it's the right decision.  Don't know if it's the wrong but, you know, it's not  gonna hurt to find some information out," McAlister explains.

The Farm Bill Basics Meeting is Monday at Region 9 Education Center in Wichita Falls. Registration starts at 6 p.m.  The cost is $10 and includes a meal, but to make sure there is enough food, coordinators ask that you pre-register by 5 p.m. this Friday.

For more information or to pre-register call the Wichita County AgriLife Extension office at 940-716-8610.
