Farmer's Market Season Looks Sweet

- As the weather gets warmer crops across Texoma are popping up.

And that means fresh produce will soon be making it's way to local farmer's markets.

Local farmers will start displaying their produce at the Wichita Falls Farmer's Market Tuesday.

The dry conditions have had little affect on most things out at the Charlie-Thornberry Farms, but the cold winter did take it's toll on a few crops.

When the Downtown Wichita Falls Farmer's Market opens Tuesday you can expect a good variety of fresh, locally-grown items.

“Three different kinds of lettuce, maybe some broccoli, I’m not sure maybe cabbage, some greens. We will have pecans, honey, some little tomatoes some asparagus,” says farmer Steve Young.

Throughout the summer, the choices will continue to increase.

Farmers will have summer classics like blackberries and watermelon and expect to have some local peaches, which they weren't able to have last year.

If the produce isn't enough of a draw there will be plenty of things to do out at the corner of 8th and Ohio all summer long.

“Master Gardeners are going to be there every other week, we'll have a major event every other week, so when we're not having a major event master gardeners will be there,” says Young.

Blackberry Day will kick off those events and the Master Gardeners will start with a rain barrel lesson.

Young says the lack of rain hasn't affected most of his veggies because they have a drip system and the little bit of rain has been good for black eyed peas but the weather has caused one issue.

“The sand blowing is never good for any of that and with the rain and wind then you're gonna end up with some sand blowing so we get out and try to till the soil as best we can,” says Young.

Over all, Young says they're doing okay and he expects the farmer's market will have plenty to offer through September and maybe a little longer.
