Finishing Touches Being Put on Vernon's New Turf Field

- The lions now have some new grass to play on.

We're talking about the Vernon lions, of course.

District officials say crews re-did every aspect of the field, ripping up the grass and getting rid of most of the dirt.

They say it was an easy decision to make.

Mark Bateman, Vernon athletic director, says, "Really for safety reasons and we're running out of water. The field wasn't in very good shape and hadn't been for the last couple years. It was just getting worse and worse."

The field's being paid for with money that was already in the district's fund balance.

Crews are also revamping the retaining walls by lining them with rock.

New fencing is being put in, too.

All the work should be complete by the start of next month.

Officials say they're looking forward to debuting the new food to the public at their first home game, also their homecoming, and that's September 12 when they host the Burkburnett Bulldogs.
