Fire Destoys Home in Byers

Clay County fire units were still working Thursday to extinguish embers from a fire in Byers Wednesday that destroyed an elderly couple's home.

Volunteer fire departments from Petrolia, Charlie, Jolly and Dean fought that fire.

Thursday morning they sent for tanker trucks to bring more water, and say they may get a bulldozer on scene to clear the rubble.

They were concerned the high winds could spread flames to other nearby homes.

The residents, John and Jan Auchmoody escaped unharmed when the fire broke out yesterday morning.

It's believed to have started in a garage.

They are not sure how many of their 10 or so cats and dogs made it out. Auchmoody says a few of them have been found but many remained missing this morning.

The fire destroyed all the couple's possessions including a pickup and two garages.
