First Ever Texas Influenza Awareness Day Celebrated

- As temperatures cool off a bit across Texoma health officials are raising awareness on a bug that starts biting this time of year. The Wichita Falls Wichita County Public Health District is honoring the first Texas Influenza Awareness Day by getting the word out about protecting yourself against the flu.

Health officials say some physicians and clinics have reported several confirmed flu cases in the Wichita Falls area which health officials say is a little early for the bug to bite.

"We don't see confirmed cases until sometimes November and even into December so our actual confirmed flu is a little bit earlier this year," says Kay Sabine, immunization charge nurse at Wichita Falls-Wichita County Public Health District.

Health officials say the best protection against the flu is getting a flu shot. However, they also recommend these actions to prevent spreading the flu.

They include washing your hands often, covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze and staying home if you are sick.
