First Project at Fain Elementary Wrapping Up

Fain Elementary adopted project based learning this year and the kindergarten classes have been working on a lemonade stand. This week they are putting the finishing touches on their project.

When the kindergarten teachers originally presented their plan of making a lemonade stand not everyone thought the kids would be able to tackle such a project.

“It's been amazing,” said Clarisa Richie, the principal of Fain Elementary. “People kept saying kindergartners can't do this they are too little. They just can't and to see them start the projects has been amazing because that sets the precedent for all the other students in the school. We have five-year old’s who can stand up and be interviewed and create prototypes and sell things. Then other students can too.”

The teachers had a bit of a learning curve when they first started and had to make some changes to the way they teach.

“I felt like I had to unlearn teaching and kind of relearn it in a different way,” said Emily Vann, a kindergarten teacher. “So, I just changed my language most of the time. A lot of what I said was now directed about a lemonade stand, talking about a lemonade stand. Instead of using other manipulatives or ideas, we targeted lemonade stands.”

It has also been a big adjustment for the kids. They helped design the stand and even made a commercial to promote it-- but it hasn't been all work and no play-- the teachers say the kids have a lot of fun along the way.

“They have been so fun. So excited and everything is lemonade stands now,” Vann said.

“They like it a lot. As a matter of fact, I had a parent stop me in the cafeteria this week and tell me his kids were so excited about coming to school,” Richie said.

And some of the students shared their excitement while also saying what they enjoyed most.

“I like it because there are lemons,” said Amyah, one of the students

“I like it because all the lemonade tastes good and the designs look good,” said Caden, another student. “Mine was doing the commercials.”

“Mine was doing the commercials too,” Amyah said.

And soon they will see how well their hard work pays off, when their lemonade stand opens for business. Saturday morning the kids will get to show everyone what they have been working on. The lemonade stand will be open from 9-11 at Fain Elementary.
