TXDoT has installed the first of a new type of traffic signal for left turns and motorists should see more of them in coming months and years.

The first new flashing yellow traffic signal in Wichita County was recently installed at the intersection of State Highway 79 and Professional Drive.

The new signal has a steady red arrow for stop, a steady yellow arrow for be prepared to stop, a flashing yellow arrow for left turns allowed but must yield to oncoming traffic, and the steady green arrow for protected left turns.

TXDoT officials say the addition of a flashing yellow arrow has shown to reduce accidents, and are meant to end some of the confusion some drivers have over when to turn with the green signal with no arrow.

The new signals are being gradually introduced across the state and the nation.
