FNF Preview: 2017 Burkburnett Bulldogs

The Burkburnett Bulldogs missed the playoffs a year ago.
But a new coach, a new attitude and a district which will certainly give them an opportunity....have the Bulldogs primed for postseason play.

Tobin McDuff has tonight's Friday Night Football Preview of the Burkburnett Bulldogs.

The Burkburnett Bulldogs have won just 12 games over the past five season.
Fans of the black and orange are hoping a new coach will help ignite a new result on Friday night's this fall.
Jason Meng, the former Midwestern State player and longtime assistant coach at Rider takes over the Bulldogs program.

"They just changed our whole mood. You know compared to last season coming off 1-9, coach Meng came in and just basically said we have to change that. And having coach ward as our receivers coach, I'm really excited about that." Carrington Manual, Burkburnett wide receiver

Yes, among the new assistants Meng brought in is the former Rider and Texas Tech wide receiver Eric Ward. The Bulldog's receivers say it's inspiring to have a coach who just four years ago was re-writing the Red Raiders record books.

It seems Burk always has one receiver who is the ultimate big play threat. Last season it was Darion Chafin making plays like this one against Vernon.

Manuel will be asked to fill that role and then some this season as Kylon Willie announced he was transferring to Allen earlier this month.

"He's one of those seniors you depend on. He's going to be a vertical threat for us and he's also going to play some secondary for us. He's just got the big play capability. We're excited about him and think he'll do big things for us." Jason Meng, Burkburnett Head Coach

But the Bulldogs will also rely heavily on the run game. Robert Knight suffered a torn ACL in the third game of the season a year ago. He's back, and ready to rack up the yards.

"I've been at Coach Meng's shoulder tugging on his pocket every day, at scrimmages. Just let me get in. I can make that play. Every day I'm waiting for it." Robert Knight, Burkburnett running back

"I've always loved being his teammate so it's really nice to see him back on the field." Shane Huizenga, Burkburnett offensive lineman

Senior Shane Huizenga leads an offensive line which welcomes shouldering the load of making this team a playoff team in 2017.

"I feel like we've improved a lot in the run game. Our pass game has to improve too. I feel like we did well last year but I feel there is always room to improve."  Shane Huizenga, Burkburnett offensive lineman

The Bulldogs were forced to improvise at quarterback a year ago after all-district signal caller Mitchell Jennings tore his ACL in the preseason.

Marcus Jackson and Gentry Mullins were forced into action. This year Westin Priddy joins the q-b battle.
Meng hopes and expects one to earn the starting role while the others grab significant playing time at other positions.

While the offense will certainly sport new wrinkles under Meng

"More formations. Coming out in different sets. Gonna line up and try to confuse the defense." Robert Knight, Bulldogs running back

It's the Bulldog's defense which must improve dramatically after allowing an average of 45 points per game last year.

"Number one thing on defense is we're trying to bring out some motivation, toughness, enthusiasm getting after it. That's the main thing. That's the mantra. We're gonna take the field. We're gonna charge it and when there is a turnover we're going to get excited. When it's our time to go we want them running out there all wild and crazy and having fun. Run around communicating and that type of stuff. So that's kind of our mantra." Jason Meng. Burkburnett head coach

For the fourth straight year, the Bulldogs open the season against Iowa Park.

This year the game is in Burk
