Court hearings are pending for a former Altus airman who faces a life sentence in connection with the death of a toddler.

Twenty-three-year-old Dustin Smades was arrested on Monday and is charged with child abuse by injury for the death of 2-year-old Curtis Hoffman. Hoffman's death has been under investigation since April and Smade was arrested when investigators say his statements contradicted evidence found at the scene.

A conviction carries a maximum life sentence. Smades bond is set at $300,000.
