Fort Sill Opens New USO Center

FORT SILL - When the 75th Field Artillery Brigade came home from Korea, Lieutenant Colonel Will Freds said the USO provided them with packets to welcome them home and gave them some basic necessities.

Something he said soldiers need after long deployment.

"The entire battalion coming back after being gone for 9 months, moving in to new barracks rooms without their stuff and it was very helpful," Freds said.

Fort Sill now has its own USO Center, the only one in the state. And for Freds, its means a lot not only to him, but to his soldiers.

"That's what USO does, it takes care of the soldiers. So we're very excited to have the USO here to give soldiers a place of respite and someone that they can count on in the way that they do."

A billiards table, shuffle board, eight gaming systems, two dartboard alleys, and a reading nook are all things these soldiers can look forward to at the USO.

And not only can soldiers come to the uso for rest and relaxation, the USO will also go to them in the field to boost their morale.

"When someone feels connected to the things that they love they have a morale boost and they're ready to do their job," said USO Center Director Jennifer Kirby. "And to me that's mission important and that's why I do my job."

"The Army can be very stark, the Army can be an exhausting place and to have a warm, comfortable place where they can come in and reach out to family touch base on the internet," Freds sais. "It's an extremely important thing for soldiers."

And Kirby hopes the new USO center will stay busy year in and year out.

"I like to get this center up and running on a steady basis. I like to see foot traffic increase over the next year and I like to make sure that a year from now that no service member in the state of Oklahoma would not know that we have a USO Oklahoma here."

Wednesday's ribbon cutting ceremony was very timely, coming on the 75th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The USO also turned 75 years old this year, having been formed just months before Pearl Harbor.
