Fundraisers are at the 50% mark in raising money for the first-ever Wichita County Sheriff's Office and volunteer firefighters memorial.

The money is being raised by members of the Wichita County Sheriff's Office Citizens Academy Alumni Association.

Once they hit their goal, they'll have the memorial built outside the courthouse.

It will feature life-size bronze figures of a sheriff's deputy and volunteer firefighter.

Fundraising started in 2010.

Deputy Melvin Joyner says, "The process has been long, but it's finally getting closer and closer to meet our goals and build this."

Larry Ash, the project chairman, says, "The police department has one, the city fire department has one, and we thought it was time that the sheriff's office has one as well as the volunteer firefighters."

The group hopes to have most of the materials purchased by April.

They're selling tasers to help raise money.

Now they're also selling bricks that will line the memorial.
