Jennifer Chewens from Wichita Falls is a cancer survivor and she says each day is a battle. But she says the little things like the Giving Comfort Tour, that get her through each day.
"The one thing as a cancer survivor that you need, is encouragement," Chewens says.
Chewens was diagnosed in December of 2012 with colorectal cancer and has been going through treatment for two years.
"Some days are good days and some days are bad days and you take it as they come and these kits can help you, can be that big difference for a lot of us," Chewens says.
Chewens is talking about the Giving Comfort kits. Giving Comfort is a part of the McKesson Foundation. They provide cancer patients with kits, that include encouraging messages submitted by people from all over the country.
Starting in July the organization developed it's first Giving Comfort Tour. And on Tuesday, they made a stop at the Texas Oncology in Wichita Falls.
"We've been traveling from Detroit, to New York City and all down the eastern sea board, to Louisiana, across to Texas, finishing out tour in Dallas tomorrow, and we've been bringing our messages of comfort to cancer patients and also video taping and having written words of comfort and continuing this message along," Elizabeth Howland with the Giving Comfort Tour, says.
Howland says as the team travels they not only enjoy encouraging the patients, but also find joy in it themselves.
"Seeing that, how people can rise to the occasion to have to go through something that's very frightening and unknown and still maintain their humor and hope," Howland says.
And for Chewens, it's simple acts of kindness like this that really make a difference.
"These messages from people you don't know, that are praying for you and encouraging you, it's just priceless. It really is priceless," Chewens says.
Tuesday's stop in Wichita Falls is their second to last stop for the tour. And if you want to help out you can actually donate a kit to a patient who you've never met, or someone you know.
